An accessibility statement is the page that states which accessibility standard a site aims for, how far it meets it today, its known gaps and how a user can report content they cannot access. It is not a claim but the summary of an evaluation, which is why it is written after an audit.
Which sections does a statement contain?
The text this tool generates follows the structure W3C recommends: commitment, conformance status, known gaps, evaluation method, feedback route and date. “Fully conformant” is written only if you choose it; the tool does not pass a conformance verdict. Which standard applies to you is explained in the guide to the circular and in the “Who it covers” section of the web accessibility audit page.
Why writing down known gaps matters
A statement that leaves out its gaps loses credibility at the first complaint. When the known gaps and the plan to fix them are written down plainly, the statement becomes a roadmap rather than a promise. The list of gaps comes from an audit: web accessibility audit.
