Brand mention.

A brand mention is a brand’s name being named without a link, and in the era of answer engines it is a visibility signal independent of links.

In classic SEO the currency of visibility was the link: it passed authority and brought a visitor. Answer engines split those two — a model naming a brand is under no obligation to link to it, and mostly does not.

What remains is valuable all the same. Your name appearing inside an answer means you are treated as a reference in that field, and it pays off in brand searches, in direct visits, and in the fact that the person asking for a quote has already heard of you.

Measurement is done by hand, and regularity matters more than coverage: fifteen target questions, three engines, in a private window, monthly, recorded. The most valuable column in that record is “in what context were you mentioned”.

Because the real question is not whether you were mentioned but HOW. Being mentioned repeatedly in the wrong context is not a visibility problem but a positioning one, and the fix is made in the content, not in the measurement.

There is no shortcut to increasing it. What earns a mention is producing something genuinely worth mentioning in that field and leaving a trace of it elsewhere too — clear definitions, measured data, open-source tools.

A mention is a measure of awareness, not of acquisition — and it should not be assessed in the same table as traffic targets. It pays off not in direct visits but in the long-term rise of brand searches.

It is a slow-growing signal; watching its weekly swings misleads. The real pattern emerges on a quarterly view, and the record has to be handed over — a series of observations living in one person’s memory disappears when that person leaves.

  1. Choose fifteen target questions — the ones your customers actually ask.
  2. Ask on three engines — different engines choose different sources.
  3. Ask in a private window — session history can artificially favour your own site.
  4. Record — date, question, sources mentioned, in what context.
  5. Repeat monthly — one observation is not enough to judge; the pattern comes from repetition.

The fourth column — in what context — is the most valuable. Not whether you were mentioned but HOW shows what you are known for; being mentioned in the wrong context is a positioning problem.

There is no shortcut to increasing it, and it cannot be bought. What earns a mention is producing something genuinely worth mentioning in that field and leaving a trace elsewhere too: writing the clearest definitions of the field’s core concepts, publishing data from your own measurements, releasing a working tool as open source.
